Mary Beth Writes

This week I received a Covid vaccine. Last week Len and I received emails from Froedtert that they were making vaccination appointments for people already registered in their system who are over 65. I’ve never been so glad to be so old. We signed up, I got the shot (Pfizer) this week, Len gets his tomorrow.

After we made the appointments we called our daughter to offer to watch our grandkids overnight in March. She and her husband will also both be vaccinated by March; they are in professions that are getting access in Illinois.

Boy, that conversation was funny.

Me: “Maybe you guys would like to think about going out to dinner in the city and then stay overnight in a downtown hotel?”

Daughter, laughing so hard I think she was about to weep. “Yeah, I think we would like to think about that.”

It’s been a long year.

Len and I have been careful humans and we’ve reminded ourselves nearly every day that we are lucky. We’re have what we need to be secure and we live where it’s easy to walk, bike, and hike and heck, we like each other. We FaceTime read to our granddaughter and learned how to pull off a rousing game of Facetime peekaboo with our toddling grandson. We talk with our kids often; we’ve gotten together a few memorable times outside. I’m never going to forget our “Christmas presents exchange picnic” in a sleety backyard on a 20-degree day.

But it is AMAZING to think about being able to GO OUT and DO THINGS!

I think this is the thing they call hope. It definitely has wings and even though I rarely dance on the outside, my spirit keeps doing a soft shoe routine.

Of course, we will keep wearing masks but soon we can go places! I can read Charlotte’s Web to the 3rd graders in their classroom and then stay the afternoon to listen to kids read to me. We can visit our children! Our granddaughter wants us to bring her mommy’s doll tea set to her and boy, I’m ready for a tea party like none other. Do our own grocery shopping instead of ordering and picking up? Yes! We can go to the stores we have missed with all our hearts. Goodwill and Lowe’s and maybe even Target to peruse the endcaps? Eating in, OMG, a restaurant? Car trips. Hanging out with friends?

After I received the shot they asked me to sit a few minutes to make sure I wouldn’t have an immediate reaction. While I sat I tweeted that my vaccination was my Thanksgiving, my Christmas, and my Happy New Year.

A twitter friend tweeted back, “This is the Rollout of Hope.”

Not often, but often enough to surprise us, life exceeds our imagination and what’s coming is better than what’s routine. Like when there was a big stuffed pink poodle toy under the Christmas tree for me. Or reading Little Women in 5th grade and realizing some girls grow up to be writers. The afternoon when I was still a teenager, sitting on a high hill, I watched a thunderstorm roll in from the west. I understood how amazing it was to see the sky filled with electricity and feel the sheeting rain that drenched my dog and me. Being alive was so much bigger than I had expected.

The night my brother came home from Vietnam. The first time I was published. When our babies were born. When Kathleen asked if I would like to be on the MayaWorks board.

Do you know what I mean?

It is a survival skill to pull together the resources one needs to live the life they have.

But then, sometimes, the curtains go up for a bit and we see how big life is and how rich we are.

I had one of those moments this week.

Do you know what I mean?

Laura is the amazing (not kidding) teacher who teaches the 3rd grade in which I have volunteered for four years. It means so much to me to belong, a bit, to her class of 8-year-olds!

Sent ya some stickers and have been collected long wrapping paper tubes for your 3rd graders. Took my mom to get Moderna on Friday, my dad's older but he hasn't had an invite yet! She had no reactions. Another great piece! Thanks

Thank for the stickers - they are right next to me me waiting for my next round of penpal writing. Good luck getting both of your parents to and from, and to and from the vaccine.

I know what you mean!! It has been a long year. Hoping our shots are on the horizon. I can’t wait!

I heard on the news tonight that 6% of Indiana has the vaccine in the, Be careful around the other 94%!

I'm waiting for Aurora to start signing people up for the vaccine... I've been contacted to say that they will be signing people 65 and up shortly, and I'm also on a list in kenosha just in case, age has it's perks...

If there was a verifiable way to trade places with a younger person who is a teacher, I would do it. But since there isn't such a program, then I'm glad to get the shot.

I'm nowhere near getting vaccinated but my heart lifts every time one of my friends gets one--and that includes you, Mary Beth! Congrats. Also, what a beautiful recollection of hope-filled memories. I don't know if I could make a list that succinct--but babies being born would definitely be on there. :)

Thanks and yup, the kids and the writing and the partners who are also friends. There are really good moments...

Your description of hope made me weep with happiness and anticipation.

Y is for Yellowstone

9/27/2023

Back in February I asked you to give me topics to write about that would correspond to the alphabet. Sometimes several of you sent ideas for one letter and sometimes I wrote about all of them (I’s and S’s) Here we are at letter Y for which your suggestions are Yummy Food and Yawns. The word yawn absolutely makes me yawn; no way I could write about that - I would yawn for hours. I worked on Yummy Food but could only find a scolding voice about Americans eating too much sugar. Bah. True but not interesting.

So, I gave Y a go again. Y is for?

First of all - Thank you to those of you who came to the Wisconsin Writers Association zoom gala last night. I HAD received an email a week ago which said I would be reading my whole story. Cutting it in half while I was reading was awkward! It was still a happy event for me and the other writers. Thanks for being there!

X is for Xeriscape

9/20/2023

Xeriscape is pronounced ‘zeer-eh-scape’ and it means landscaping with little to no irrigated water. Readers in the west already know about this. Those of us who don’t live in arid or desert places need to wake up to the incredible resource that water is - then begin to accommodate ourselves to “water all around and beneath us all the time” is no longer our reality. Nor is it our right. We’ve got to get smarter and do better.

W is for Wonder

9/13/202

To whomever suggested Wonder - Thank You!  ‘Wonder’ has been bobbing in my mind like a frog in a pond.

However, I have FOUR suggestions from you guys for X - but I do not want to write four X essays. These are the suggestions:

1.) X signature substitution

2.) xylophone on a string pulled by a toddler

3.) xenophobia

4.) Xmas.

If you have an opinion respond with the one you would like me to attempt. I will choose whichever X gets the most comments.

There will be no gerrymandering in this election.

Grownups Noticing Their Lives

NAMI

Most of you know about my former weird and lovely job of coordinating an employability skills program for Huber-qualified inmates in the Racine County Jail (that’s a mouthful). Early on I realized that most of the people I would work with were people with 1.) huge addiction problems, and 2.) underlying and over-the-top and to-the-side just lying around mental health issues.

V is for Vocabulary

9/6/2023

For those who are new here - This year I am writing about topics, in alphabetical order, that were suggested to me by readers. Sometimes this is hard!

IRTNOG

My cousin-in-law Dave has some powerfully thorough avocations (for fun and profit he earned a PhD in biochemistry; you will notice this in his list). This year, among other pursuits, he has been collecting words which have appeared in our culture since 1945, which was the year he also appeared in our culture.
