Mary Beth Writes

Today I am writing what I could most accurately describe as a Twilight Bark. As in, one dog barking a heartfelt warning to many other dogs. (Do NOT miss this Twilight Bark clip from YouTube.)

On Friday Len went for his annual checkup. While there, he received a pneumonia vaccine, because after all the hoopla about the covid vaccines, the pneumonia shot is no big deal, right?

Len started feeling lousy that very afternoon and he still felt awful on Saturday. So we didn’t go to Chicago to visit our kids and grands.

By Sunday morning he felt okay, so we decided to drive to the kids that afternoon.

BUT. A very big crash happened far ahead of us on south bound 94 in northern Illinois and they closed down all four lanes. It was a Suez-worthy backup.  We drove two miles in two hours just to get to the exit ramp off the expressway. At which point, of course, they reopened the expressway. So we got back on it. We had planned to get to the kids at 2:00. We got there at 4:15.

Oh well, it was wonderful to see our loved ones. My granddaughter held my hand a lot as she pulled me through her house to see her things.  She has a whole panoply of very small princesses and princes and side characters.  She told me they are her “trophies for good choices.” I’m still laughing. How much would you love to get trophies for  your good choices?

Anyway, here are my twilight bark warnings for you. Isn’t it amazing that we can be this many years old and there are still so many things to learn?

1. Do not have a vaccination the day before you are going to do something you really want to do. Most likely you won’t have strong side effects but once in a while, you will.

2. Even though you are going to a place you used to live, and you know the route like the back of your hand, consider clicking open Google Maps or whatever driving app you use. Let it stay open while you travel. Those apps know where giant snafus lurk and they will steer you around them. By the time we noticed a lot of cars getting off at an exit – we had zipped past it. That’s when I opened the app to discover our ETA had just gone Suez on us.

Have you learned new strategies lately for how to do a very simple thing you have done a zillion time before?

Please. Do share.

WOW!  UPDATE FROM LEN!

We interrupt this post from Mary Beth to bring you late-breaking news!  The thing that lead to the traffic jam was not a run-of-the-mill fender bender - no, it was a Chicago-style shooting!  Apparently an older gentleman (actually younger than me, but still older than most) was driving East (toward the City) in a Honda Civic when a Blue Chevy rear-ended him.  That driver then shot at the fellow in the Civic, punching holes in his car and breaking the windshield.  The victim was hurt by flying glass, but not injured by the bullet, which is good.  They are still looking for the driver of the Chevy.  Scant details here:  https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/all-eastbound-lanes-of-interstate-...

Thanks for your concern. Any pneumonia comes near me better be prepared to enjoy a healthy helping of Whoop-Ass.

Glad everyone’s OK from all of the excitement. Since it sounds like you’ll be driving through here more, on your way to visit “the city”, I will mention that there’s an app called Lake County Passage that shows things affecting your passage through Lake County, meaning road issues, mostly, as well as construction. I am a senior, but one of my favorite books as a child was 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. I still read it every few years. It’s a bit different (better) than the Disney Movie. The VERY BEST PART is the Twilight Barking! It gives me goosebumps every time and can bring adults to laughter and tears. Don’t miss it! Let me know if you agree,

I didn't know 101 Dalmatians until I became a mom, although Len would sometimes talk about "the twilight bark" and when I saw the movie, I melted. Yes, the urgency of love! Thanks for the app suggestion. Google Map also generally has late-breaking news on road closures - but one must have it on. Which we didn't.

Cats Again (Lost In Racine)

 12/6/2023

Because I now have my Substack site where I can publish my stories, its more exciting to write fiction. I’m working on a story now.

Meanwhile, here’s a newspaper column of yore. If you like cats, you will probably like it. If you don’t like cats, well, you are missing a lot of grace, humor, and vacuuming opportunities.

We don’t currently want to adopt new cats, but since we’ve now lived with twelve of the world’s finest, we are rich in memories that make us laugh.

Len’s Birthday

11/30/2023

Last week I mentioned that Monday of this week would be Len’s birthday. A friend remarked to me ever so kindly later that day, “I thought his birthday was the 30th?”

It is. Len’s birthday is the 30th. This same friend has commented to me, over the years, about how much I remember.

Covid Diary #1350 Thanksgiving

11/22/2023

Today is 1350 days since the that March Friday in 2020 when we all went into quarantine.

Today is 60 years since JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963. I remember that day, so does Len, so do many of you. Here’s a scary truth. We are as far today from that day – as that day was from the Wright brother’s first flight at Kitty Hawk on Dec 17, 1903.

Quarantine Diary #1349 Sci-Fi & Prophecy

11/21/2023

We both took Covid tests this morning and both of us still have pink lines. I asked the internet what this means and it says I might be pregnant.

I have a call into my doctor’s office to discuss. I feel so much better that if I didn’t know I have Covid, I wouldn’t know it. I’ve been sicker than this after too much pie.

Covid Diary #1347

11/19/2023

A few of you might realize yesterday we were 1345 days since March 13, 2020, and today we’re at 1347. Yup, I used a different calculator. Just a fun reminder that precision depends as much on asking the right question as doing perfect math.

I’m in day #4 of having Covid. No more chills. I have a fever of 100.4 which is more impressive than the 100.2 that Len achieved on his Day #4.  I’m taking various OTC meds and I keep track of them in my phone’s notes because, wow, it’s so easy to have no memory of the last time one took something. I’m good. Enough.

Covid Diary #1345

11/18/2023

I thought I was done with the Covid Diary but guess what? Len and I caught Covid this week! Actually, Covid caught us. We have continued to wear masks in stores, library, meetings, and our church so we will never know for sure where Len encountered Covid. And since I got it four days later, I guess we know where I got it…
