Shontay is a new friend. I first met her last fall as I started to work a little each week with her bright and sunny 3rd grade daughter. The teacher in the class was frustrated that some of her hardest-working students were not getting the extra attention she would love to provide for them, so she asked if I would like to work with this particular kid.

I know several of you have loved ones who work with people who have Covid. I have heard from you the cynicism of your loved ones who scramble for protective gear, who scramble for equipment, who slog through long, wrenching, and exhausting days. So when those loved ones hear from the media that they are heroes, it does not, in general, seem to impress them.

On April 2 I wrote about the Mashpee Wampanoag people and the situation they are in right now –this damnable administration is removing them from their land. Read my explanation here.

I did cleaning and laundry this morning. My fav (not) part is moving stuff from the second floor to the first floor to the basement and then back. Because who doesn’t love a Stairmaster with a dirty bathroom at one end and half-done laundry at the other?

I spent five wonderful hours outside in my own backyard this morning. Dug more garden bed area, finished churning in the rest of the winter compost, covered much of the area that will be vegetable beds soon with watered-in cardboard. I dunno, I think it will make the earth warm and later I can rip the cardboard around the base of plants to help hold down the weeds. Seemed like a good idea.

“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds it’s rest in thee.”

― Augustine of Hippo, Confessions

I read Augustine way back in my college years. I half understood his claim then and I think I still only half understand it. Though it might be a different half.

The Zoom meeting with Tom Palzewicz yesterday was as easy and interesting to listen to as the last time I heard him.

He introduces himself by explaining the three issues he is running on.

1. Health care for all.  As anyone paying attention has realized; tying health care to employment can be and now is a disaster.

Well that was unexpected. Last night I posted the 4/29 diary and then we ate dinner.

Do you see their faces?

The beautiful woman who took her own life a few days ago. She was an ER doctor as well as director of the Emergency Department in a NYC hospital.

The little 5-year old girl Skyler, whose mom and dad are EMT’s in Detroit. They must have brought the virus home to her.

I had to do an errand this morning that was in the neighborhood of a Stein’s yard and garden store. I’d already looked online at several seed companies. All seemed to feature whackadoodle high prices as well as warnings about no substitutions and delayed shipments. That was discouraging.
